Prepositions and Conjunctions

Finally, something we should've done earlier! In this lesson, you will learn how to use the basic conjunctions (and, or, but) and basic prepositions (of, from, on, in, at, with, without, over, under) in Romanian! Let's get started, shall we?

Some example sentences below

Bogdan și Alex merg. - Bogdan and Alex are going.

și can also be used like "too". The subject always comes after și.
Merg și eu. - I'm going too.
Merge și Daniel. - Daniel is going too.

Vorbesc acum, sau vrei să vorbești? - I'm speaking now, or do you want to speak?

Da, vreau să vorbesc, dar nu mă lași. - Yes, I want to speak, but you're not letting me.

Some example sentences below

Un creion e pe o masă - A pencil is on a table.
Sunt două pixuri în cutie. - There are 2 ball pens in a box.

Merg la magazin - I'm going to the store
Sunt la magazin - I'm at the store

Casa mea e peste deal - My house is over the hill.
Pisica e sub scaun - The cat is under the chair.

Ei merg cu o persoană foarte celebră - They are going with a very famous person.
1*Plec cu trenul - I leave by train
2*Poți să vorbești cu mine - Can you speak to me?
2*Ei merg fără tine. - They are going without you.

1*If you say you .. (I'm going to bucharest by train) you use "cu" and the instrument you use is in the definite article.

2*When you just say the pronoun of a person after a preposition, you don't say "fără eu/tu". Instead you say "fără mine/tine" (without me/you). Those are called accusative pronouns. The rest are the same in the accusative (el, ea, noi.. him her us, etc).


De, and din can get a little complicated at times. De expresses from or of or by (author).
El nu e departe de aici - He is not far from here.
De unde ești? - Where are you from? (literally: of where are you?)
O ceașcă de ceai - A cup of tea.
O carte de John - A book by John

Din means from (inside) somewhere or something. Also used for out of (somewhere). or by (chance, luck, mistake), or for a certain emotion (love, fear).
Sunt din Ungaria - I'm From Hungary
Ies din magazin - I exited out of the store.
Din întâmplare - By chance
Din dragoste - For love

Pentru expresses "for" (a purpose).
Pentru ce? - For what (purpose does this have)?
